I'm a month early to start fulfilling my New Year's resolutions, but I'm going to post this anyway. December first, officially, marks my promotion to E Dan. It's as good a date as any to reaffirm the fact that it's time to start over. We have a tradition in my lineage that says when you get a new rank, it's time to reexamine everything you've learned up to this point, tear it down, and build it back up. Take the best of what you've got this far and build on it.
It also takes on a kind of spring cleaning feel. You analyze the techniques and theories that have gotten you this far and keep only the good ones. The things that aren't so good should be thrown out or taken down to the second-hand store. Maybe while you're there, you'll find something sitting on an out of the way shelf that's right up your alley. This can be applied literally and figuratively. One person's trash is another one's treasure.
Starting this site will mark my new home on the web. It's martial arts related because that's the hobby to which I've dedicated all of my spare time. I'll try to remain focused on that hobby, and will rarely post things outside of that realm. I've got other online spaces for that sort of thing. Eventually, this will evolve into an online space for my studio to find interesting and practical knowledge. My students will one day frequent these pages. As such, I'll have to keep my writing a little more polished and objective.
So, I welcome you and invite you to join me on my journey. You'll disagree with what I have to say but you might also find something you like. As with most things in my life, my ideas are open for discussion. Just make sure you don't say anything that you don't want to live eternally on the web.
